FROM NEWBURY WITH LOVE
A collaboration between RedCape Theatre, Turtle Key Arts and Corn Exchange Newbury, From Newbury with Love was a devised professional theatre production incorporating an international youth exchange program of twenty young performers from Newbury Youth Theatre and the Aleccu Russo school in Chisinau, Moldova.
The show told the true story of Slava Aidov, who was imprisoned in brutal conditions by the Soviet authorities for writing a leaflet; his young daughter Marina; his wife Lera, and a 71-year-old bookseller, prompted by an Amnesty International letter-writing campaign to send them a postcard that simply read: ˝With love from Newbury, Berks, England, Harold & Olive˝.
As Youth Director on such a wonderful production, it was a privilege to see the power of theatre to transcend language and cultural barriers and to bring young people of different nationalities together as friends and artists.
